I have a basket full of pretty skeins of yarn that have been hand spun by artisans from many different Etsy shops. Just looking at the yarn in this basket brings me joy. I started wondering why…
- Is it because of the potential that is in this basket?
- Is it because of the artistic handmade work that already went into turning sheep wool into a usable textile?
- Is it the many colors and textures?
- Is it the excitement I feel when I think about the way the yarn will feel in my hands as I knit stitches together?
- Is it because I can use the yarn to create something beautiful?
Yes.
I think it’s all of these and more.
The longer I stare at the incredible potential in this basket, the more my mind wanders and I can’t help but compare the yarn to humans. There is so much potential in a human being. I’m amazed at the ability we all have to create beautiful things in every area of our lives. I’m not just referring to the obvious creations like painting and building and knitting and the arts. I’m also referring to less obvious things like:
Moving into an empty house and turning it into a home by filling it with people who love, cry, and laugh together.
Or taking random ingredients and creating a delicious meal. Then inviting someone over to share it with you.
Or taking simple construction paper and creating a fun and memorable lesson for a room full of excitable preschoolers.
Or being kind to someone at the bus stop, which then creates a smile on their face.
Every day we humans are doing things to create all kinds of beauty, which makes our short time on this earth more vibrant, rich, and deep. We can knit beauty together within our families, our friends, and the lives we touch.
We are made to create. And that’s beautiful.
